Dean E. Calcagni, MD

Dr. Calcagni is a specialist at assisting organizations in establishing and managing medical research programs and in obtaining funding for them. He applies his many years of managing medical research programs and understanding of emerging technology to solve specific problems for healthcare clients.

As a past Director of Strategic Planning for the Biomedicine Business Area of the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, Dr. Calcagni improved the ability of the lab to respond to the DOD’s needs in the assessment of medical technology.  He strengthened the ties between the lab and the JHU medical community.

 

Prior to joining the lab, Dr. Calcagni was the Director of Medical and Life Science Applications at Foster-Miller, Inc., now part of QinetiQ North America. He led the expansion of this business area during a time of great transition and growth.

 

Dr. Calcagni has been the Medical Director for projects at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and at the Defense Heath Agency.

 

Dr. Calcagni retired as a Colonel from the U.S. Army with 26 years of Active Duty. He spent his last 18 years on Active Duty at the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command (USAMRMC) in a variety of senior program management positions.

 

As a board certified anesthesiologist, Dr. Calcagni maintained a clinical practice part time at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center and was an Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. He has served as a reviewer on many proposal review boards.

 

Dr. Calcagni is a Distinguished Military Graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a B.S. in Biology and received his M.D. from the University of Vermont College of Medicine. He completed his internship and residency in anesthesiology at the Letterman Army Medical Center and a critical care research fellowship at the Stanford University Medical Center.
